Chicagoland Projected To Top 10 Million People By 2025

June 09, 2009

The Chicago real estate industry can look forward to some healthy growth in the next 16 years according to a recently published study.  Joining the New York and Los Angeles metro areas currently above 10 million people according to bizjournals, Chicago will take the leap to eighth digit population status by 2025.  The study analyzed every county in the United Stabzjournalstes attempting to project the nations future growth patterns in 5 year intervals starting in 2005.  While these figures and statistics are educated guesses and indeed “projections”, some surprising cities enter the second quarter of this century as “Top 50” cities in population.

The fastest growing city according to bizjournals.com, is the southeast’s Raleigh, North Carolina whose population is projected to double in the next 16 years to an astonishing 1.9 million residents to rank 38th by 2025.  Detroit on the other hand, is expected to continue its free fall out of the top 10 largest metro areas to 13th place with Phoenix replacing it in the top 10.   New York is still going to be the largest metro area growing to 19.9 million people.  Far and away still the biggest urban area, with Los Angeles expected to gain population to 14 million, a distant second.

Another interesting prediction from the bizjournal study is that 8 metro areas are expected to top the 1 million in population mark.  Cities on this list include Raleigh and Tuscon which have already passed the mark in 2006 and 2008 respectively, with Fresno, Bakersfield, Cape Coral – Fort Myers, McAllen-Edinburg (Texas), Albuquerque and Tulsa in that order.  Tulsa is expected to top the 1 million mark by July of 2025.

Cleveland is expected to take the biggest plunge of the top 50 cities falling from 25th to 37th, losing a drastic 190,000 people during the survey’s projections.
