Chicago Counts Down to the Gold!

September 28, 2009

2016ChicagoOlympicsJust four more days before we find out if Chicago’s Olympic bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games is a success. It’s a pivotal moment with the potential to impact Chicago’s political and economic landscape during the seven years of preparation and beyond. Of course, this includes a potential major effect on our favorite topic – Chicago real estate.

The Olympic bid itself has already set positive developments in motion. People are talking about bringing needed affordable housing and jobs to some of Chicago’s poorer neighborhoods. According to the Chicago Tribune city officials say the site of the former Michael Reese Hospital campus at 29th Street and Ellis Avenue will be put to better use, likely spurring a revitalization of the area.

How did all of this get started? With a hospitable Midwestern spirit that continues to invite the world to visit. After all, we got many of our world-renowned green spaces from previous international events, including two world’s fairs and the 1959 Pan Am Games.

This spring, Chicago was one of seven cities seeking to host Olympic athletes and spectators for the 2016 Games. Now, our city stands as one of just four remaining possibilities before the International Olympic Committee as members make their final decision on October 2.  Join Chicagoland Real Estate Forum this week as we join the countdown by talking about the other cities in the running (Madrid, Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro) and Chicago’s own Olympic chances for success. Here’s hoping for the gold.
