Chicago’s Yannell House Makes Builder Magazine’s Favorite 2009 New Homes Top Ten

December 22, 2009

Chicago’s LEED-H Platinum home in the north-side neighborhood of Ravenswood with it’s unique design made Builder Magazine’s Top Ten Coolest houses in 2009.  Built with just about every green innovation on a traditional Chicago lot near the Ravenswood Metra stop on the North shore line, the Yannell House is as green as it stands out among the typical style homes of Chicago real estate.

Goldberg General Contracting and designed by local architect Farr Associates, they oriented the Chicago’s Yannell House to capture daylight and used the home’s butterfly roof to provide just the right angle for the 10-kilowatt solar heating and cooling system and for water collection. The roof shape hides the solar panels from the street.  The design makes the home look like two distinctive homes as it is ‘Y’ shaped with an underground garage single level one one wing and a two story wing connected by a glass enclosed foyer.

The Yannell Home is great example of how a Chicago new home can be green if the architect and builder use a Green Building Standard, such as LEED or the National Green Building Standard by the NAHB.

This is a great recognition for the Yannell residence. The truly innovative design has made all parties involved with the project very proud. As the LEED for Homes provider on the project, I was honored to deliver the final Platinum certifications to the project team in recognition for their success. Congratulations!
