Walter Jacobson Moves Out of His Mansion, Again

January 08, 2010

In what was once a boarding house, retired news anchor Walter Jacobson is moving out of this Lincoln Park mansion for the second time.  The home sold for $1.975 million dollars after buying it back from his first wife in 1994 for $750,000.

Jacobson separated from his first wife and moved out of the home in the 1970’s and apparently she kept the house in the divorce settlement. Susan, his current wife, spotted the house when it was on the market in 1994 thinking that it would be a nice home to purchase, not knowing it was formerly Jacobson’s.

Reported by the Chicago Tribune’s Bob Goldsborough, the home still has many of the original details and characteristics of 19th century, such as the moulding, staircase, many fireplaces and room numbers from when it was a boarding house.  The mansion has 13 rooms and is 3 stories and was built during the 1893 Columbian Exposition.

Walter Jacobson had a long and memorable journalism career in Chicago starting as a writer at WBBM, WFLD and briefly at WMAQ.  He possessed controversial style in and out of the studio and often found himself in traffic court.  In April 2006, Jacobson announced that he would be leaving WFLD in order to retire, although his departure ultimately was the result of the station choosing not to renew his contract.
