Walt Disney’s First Chicago Home Remains Unsold

January 27, 2010

On the far northwest side of Chicago, in the Hermosa Community area, the home in which Walt Disney was born failed to sell last summer.  Yes, THAT Walt Disney was born in Chicago in the early 20th century.  According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the current owner Radoje Popovic had hopes of creating a Disney museum at the home but struggled to generate interest on the Chicago real estate market.

Disney lived briefly in the wood-framed, two story home where he was born in 1901 to 1906. At the age of four his father Elias Disney and family decided to move west to Missouri where his older brother and future business partner Roy Disney purchase farmland.  The Walt Disney home is located at 2156 N. Tripp and lacks the glamor that many Disney fans are accustomed to.  Enthusiast are probably more familiar with his adopted hometown of Marceline, Missouri where the official Walt Disney Museum resides. Disney eventually returned in his teens attending the Chicago Art Institute.

Here in Marceline, Walt Disney was quoted as saying “to tell the truth, more things of importance happened to me in Marceline than have ever happened since, or are likely to in the future.”  Perhaps this and the brief time spent at 2157 N. Tripp is why Mr. Popovic is having such a hard time convincing potential buyers of the home in Hermosa as a significant historical Chicago home.
