There’s an app for that.

Chicagoland Real Estate Forum found some of the best mobile applications available for iPhone and iPod Touch that can assist with your housing needs. They are all free and available for download at the iTunes store.

Home Hunting

Zillow Real Estate Search: Find homes for sale or rent, research surrounding home values, find out tax information and utilize the GPS system for maximum results. Voted “Best Real Estate App” by O’Reilly Media.

Chicago, DuPage and Lake County BlockShopper Real Estate: Local information on homes for sale, including for sale by owners, plus foreclosures, home prices and nearby property values. Take notes or view notes taken by others. App lists names of buyers, sellers and owners of properties.

Better Homes and Gardens ® Real Estate Home Selection Assistant: Literally assists in the house hunting process. This app allows you to rank and remember each home you view through notes and photos. It also provides neighborhood data and home maintenance tools at your fingertips.

Open Houses by
Locate open houses in your neighborhood of interest. View property details, complete with photos and floor plans, and contact selling agents. Also lets you search other homes for sale in the area, including foreclosures.

MyNewPlace Apartments and Homes for Rent: Easily find apartments and houses for rent anywhere in the country. You search can be filtered by number of bedrooms, bathrooms, price or amenities. It also finds pet-friendly residences. This app gives you a section to add your own notes and photos on each place you see, as well as links to contact the properties via phone or e-mail.

Home Improvement

ServiceLive: Describe the home improvement project you want done and when, research and compare local service professionals, request bids or name your price. Then keep in contact with the professionals you select with this app, which is a subsidiary of Sears.

ServiceMagic Home Improvement: Get quotes from plumbers, electricians, remodelers, cleaning people, painters, locksmiths, landscapers and other professionals; each that passed a 10-point screening process. Get ideas by viewing other people’s projects. App also offers green alternatives.

iHandy Level Free: Hang a picture perfectly with this tool, a level that is accurate after calibration. This free app is one of the five tools in the iHandy Carpenter app, which costs $1.99.

ColorSnap: Take a picture of any color you like, then match it to Sherwin-Williams paint colors or ask for recommendations. You can adjust the color to your liking and save it, and then find the nearest store.

PaintRemedy: Developed for professionals and do-it-yourselfers, this app assists in pinpointing a home’s paint problems inside and out, then shares tips for correcting the issues before repainting.

Home Maintenance

The Plant Doctor: Take a picture of plant problems in your landscape or garden and then receive diagnosis and cost-effective treatment advice.

mydeco: Take a photo of a room in your home, choose one of the more than 450 3D models of furniture, add the model to your photo, move the furniture around and presto! You’ve refurnished your room for free.

POWER A Universal Remote: Don’t worry about losing that remote. Turn your iPhone into a universal remote and control your TV, stereo and more.

CalcsFree — Mortgage Calculator: Touted as the most comprehensive mortgage calculator app available for free.
