Happy Earth Day! Check Out These Green Events Around Chicagoland

If you are looking to do something eco-exciting for Earth Day, here are some events occurring on April 22 that could benefit the planet and you as well.

This green home in Elmhurst is for sale and, in honor of the 40th annual Earth Day, has been discounted $40,000 through today.

*Tour an energy-efficient green home at 250 N. Myrtle Avenue in Elmhurst. Stations will be set up from 2 to 4 p.m. showcasing environmentally friendly techniques and appliances available for home use. If you love the 3,015-square-foot house, buy it! The listed sale price is $788,500, but in honor of this being the 40th Earth Day, the LINDAM Property Group is offering a $40,000 discount through April 22. Interested buyers may tour the home from 1 to 4 p.m.

*Chicago Magazine and Recycle Tech Solutions will be at the Chicago Tribune Tower, 435 Michigan Ave., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. accepting donations of used electronics, which will then be repurposed or recycled. Acceptable devices include cell phones, computers, laptops, monitors, toners, hard drives, USBs, fax and printer cartridges, GPS systems, cameras, MP3 players, mobile DVD players and wireless internet cards. For every item donated, Recycle Tech Solutions will plant a tree as part of its DreamGreen program.

Tour a Ravenswood green home under construction.

*Tour a green home in the Ravenswood neighborhood while it’s under construction. The Uptown Chicago residence, 4530 N. Hermitage, and its geothermal heating/cooling system and radiant floors, rainwater cistern that collects roof run-off for irrigation, advanced air sealing and soy-based insulation, framing that helps minimize the lumber used and many more green features will be showcased from 2 to 3 p.m. Space is limited, so reserve your tour spot now.

*UIC is hosting an all-day celebration for Earth Day including musical and artistic performances, activities and speakers, including Illinois Governor Pat Quinn. Organized by the Green Youth Movement, Ecojamapolooza will take place at the University of Illinois at Chicago’s East Campus Quad, 601 S. Morgan St., from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; speeches will begin around 9:45 a.m. Call (312) 996-7000 for more information.

Eco-friendly Flair Tower

*Go Green Management is hosting an Earth Day party, Green Your Footprint, from 4 to 8 p.m., at Flair Tower, a LEED certified residential building with 198 eco-friendly apartments located at 222 W. Erie, Chicago. The event will feature local eco-friendly vendors, free VEEV cocktails, a raffle and music from the past 40 years. Tickets are $30 in advance, $40 at the door. 100% of the tickets purchased will be donated to Camp of Dreams, which provides free programs for kids in need.

*Triton College is sponsoring a series of free events promoting Earth Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the library of the Learning Resource Center, located on the west side of Triton’s main campus, 2000 Fifth Ave., River Grove. Topics covered will include water conservation and rain barrels, energy efficiency, renewable energy, food impacts and green jobs. A recycling container by Samsung will be collecting old cell phones. *Learn about Project GREEN, a program involving retrofitting and weatherizing your home, at 7 p.m. at the Elmhurst Public Library, 125 S. Prospect Ave., Elmhurst. The process can save you money on utility bills, keep your home more comfortable and help the environment. Whether you are interested in doing this yourself or hiring a professional, this event, sponsored by The League of Women Voters of Elmhurst, will hep you through it.

Jean-Michel Cousteau

*Evanston’s Northwestern University is hosting a lecture entitled “The other 70 percent: Understanding the Earth’s underwater ecosystems,” which is to be presented by Jean-Michel Cousteau, son of the late Jacques Cousteau. The event, scheduled for 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Pick-Staiger Concert Hall, 50 Arts Circle, Evanston, is free, but seating is limited, so be sure to register in advance. Two small screens in the lobby will simulcast the presentation if the event fills up.

*Peck Farm Park, 38w199 Kaneville Rd. in Geneva, is celebrating Earth Day from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. with demonstrations on green cleaning, composting, parenting and local, sustainable food. Space is limited for this free event, so register in advance.

*Are you a green person looking for a eco-friendly mate? Check out Earth Day Speed Dating at 7:30 p.m. at the Suite Lounge, 1446 N. Wells St., #1R, in Old Town. The event costs $49.95, is for women ages 30 to 38 and men ages 34 to 44, and includes 10 to 12 mini-dates with green-minded singles.
