Lots of Outdoor Fun Set for this Weekend; Will Chicago’s Weather Cooperate?

April 30, 2010

How great has our weather been the last couple days? It’s a sign that it’s time to get that garden in shape. Here are several events going on this weekend in the Chicago area that will help you do just that or that will allow you, your kids and your dog to simply enjoy the outdoors, weather permitting, of course.

Garden Faire at the Chalet is sponsored by Monrovia.

*Garden Faire at the Chalet Nursery in Wilmette will help you get your outdoor area ready for Spring. Learn about gardening and design, check out the hottest new plants, benefit from nice discounts and enjoy free refreshments for your humans and pets, who are always welcome at the nursery. There will be children’s activities, lectures, cooking demonstrations and tastings, tool sharpening, raffle prizes and more.

Where: The Chalet Nursery, 3132 Lake Avenue, Wilmette

What: Garden Faire

When: Saturday, May 1; 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, May 2, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

*It’s double discount day at the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe. In the Garden Shop, you can find a wide selection of vases, planters, tools, gloves and kits to get your garden going. Your young gardener can benefit too from an assortment of books, toys and grow kits. On Saturday, May 1, members can save 20 percent on regularly priced items, which is double the usual 10 percent discount.

Where: Chicago Botanic Garden, 1000 Lake Cook Road, Glencoe

What: Double Discount Day

When: Saturday, May 1; 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

This is the project your kids can make at Home Depot on Saturday.

*Teach your kids do-it-yourself skills and tool safety at a Home Depot Kids How-To Workshop. All Home Depot stores hold free kids workshops on the first Saturday of each month. Each child will do a project and receive a kid-sized orange apron and an achievement pin. From 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 1, kids ages 5 to 12 will build a picket fence planter. Younger kids are welcome but might need some help. The planters are really cute (and perfect Mother’s Day gifts!).

Where: All Home Depot stores

What: Kids How-To Workshop; Picket Fence Planter

When: Saturday, May 1; 9 a.m. to noon

*Want to enjoy spring in other ways beside gardening? Go fly a kite! Mayor Daley’s 12th annual Kids and Kites Festival will be a lot of fun, weather permitting. BYOK (bring your own kite) or get one from the Mayor’s Office of Special Events, who will be passing out free kite kits for children to design and create, while supplies last. Then get a lesson from a actual kite flying professional.

*Bring your dog to Montrose Harbor on Saturday and you can be a part of a world record. At 10:50 a.m., pet owners will attempt to make more than 1,500 dogs sit, or lay, and stay for three minutes to break the Guiness Book world record.
