Hare it is: Rarely Available Condo for Sale in Hef’s Old Pad

May 06, 2010

Ever dream of being a guest at the Playboy Mansion on Chicago’s Gold Coast? How about living there?

Check out this beautiful foyer!

One vintage condo is for sale at 1340 N. State Parkway, the building Playboy publisher Hugh Hefner bought in 1959 and turned into the original Playboy Mansion. The asking price: A cool $2.9 million.

For two decades, Hef hosted hundreds of parties at the 72-room mansion. In the 1970s, he bought another mansion in Los Angeles, dubbed Playboy Mansion West, then moved to California for good in 1974.

The condo has direct access to the garden.

The Chicago-Gold Coast mansion, which was built around 1900, was later leased to the Chicago Art Institute for student housing, then donated to the museum in 1989. The Art Institute sold the mansion in 1993 to developer Bruce Abrams, who converted it into seven condos around the year 2000.

The 3,900-square-foot condo for sale is the only unit in the building that leads out to the mansion’s garden. It boasts three bedrooms, three-and-a-half baths, a study, a private terrace, two fireplaces and hardwood floors and architectural details throughout.

Two deeded attached-garage spaces are also included in the asking price. Not included: Bunnies.
