Bid on a Home-Related Item, Help Save a Library

May 21, 2010

The Evanston Public Library has only a few months to raise $200,000 in order to keep its lease at the South Branch Library, 949 Chicago Ave., Evanston. To help raise the funds, a recently formed group called Evanston Public Library Friends (EPL Friends) is holding an auction, and there are many home-related items that just might peak your interest.

The 2010 Armchair Auction is going on through May 30; items may be virtually bid upon through, and many items will be on display Friday, May 21 and Saturday, May 22 at 2112 Central Street in Evanston.

Donated home-related items up for auction include: a gift certificate to Andy OnCall, an Evanston-based home-repair company; a carpet cleaning gift certificate from Apelian Carpets and Orientals; an architectural consultation from Ellen Galland of Rockwell Associates Architects; a residential color consultation by Super Service Award winner Jeanne LaCasse; an hour consultation in your home about your organizational needs with Linda Parks; a garden consultation with Paula Twilling, a volunteer at the Chicago Botanic Gardens; an interior design consultation with Mitchell Channon; a dinner for 12 in your home with chef Becky Heydemann; and legal representation for the buyer or seller of residential property closing by August 31.

There is also tons of art, jewelry, restaurant and entertainment gift certificates, tickets to sporting events and signed sports paraphernalia, vacation packages and private vacation home retreats, an iPad, lots of books — some signed by the author — and much more.

There are also a bunch of beautifully decorated watering cans, the symbol for the 2010 American Library Association campaign to promote reading. Similar to Chicago’s famed “Cows on Parade,” these one-of-a-kind watering can art pieces were designed by artists and craftsmen exclusively for this auction.

You can also give a cash donation or donate an item to the auction. All proceeds will help in the effort to keep the neighborhood libraries open.
