Be Green, Save Green, Earn Green

When you turn off lights, unplug unused appliances and wash only full loads of dishes and laundry, you are doing good for the environment and saving yourself some money. Now being green can also earn you rewards.

Now you can save money and earn rewards while doing good for the Earth. How great is that?

The Citizens Utility Board (CUB) today launched CUB Energy Saver, the nation’s first online service that not only helps consumers lower their household energy costs but will reward them for doing so as well.

If you are one of the first 10,000 ComEd customers from Illinois to go to www.CUBEnergysaver.com and sign up to connect your ComEd account to the CUB Energy Saver, as well as sign up with rewards partner RecycleBank, you will have the opportunity to earn points while cutting your electric bill.

Points can be redeemed for thousands of items, coupons and gift certificates good at local and national businesses like Bed Bath & Beyond, CVS Pharmacy, Old Navy, Best Buy, Leona’s Restaurant, Panera Bread, Staples, Walmart and Carson Pirie Scott. You can also use your points toward donations.

Participants get 100 points for signing up, then two points for each kilowatt hour saved on their electric bill. They also get energy-use information and tips customized to their uses. The program is free.

CUB officials say this program was tested with 3,000 participants who annually saved about $200 while earning points toward gift certificates averaging about $130. Not bad for little effort.

There’s also a CUB Neighborhood Challenge in which groups like schools, corporations and neighborhoods can sign up and compete to win a month of free electricity or energy-saving bulbs.

People who aren’t part of the first 10,000 or who are not ComEd customers won’t be eligible to earn rewards but can still use the site to come up with money-saving tips to save some green while being green.

“At a time when families are trying to cut costs wherever they can, CUB Energy Saver will help them reduce their energy bills in ways that have never been possible before,” said CUB Executive Director David Kolata.
