Take Steps to Protect your Home from Chicago Storms

June 19, 2010

The Chicago area on Friday was hit by strong storms, which knocked out power to almost 300,000 ComEd customers, started several suburban fires, blew out two windows at Willis Tower and flooded my garage.

When your gutters are clogged, the overrun can cause damage to your shingles, roof and ceilings. Oh my!

Every time it rains, I wonder what part of my house will leak. If you feel my pain, then take time this rainy season to look around your home for potential trouble spots.

I found some help through a

post on the Equifax Personal Finance blog, which offers tips on how to make your home weather-worthy.

Among author Ilyce Glink’s suggestions of things to do every spring:

*Clean your gutters and downspouts

*Install a dehumidifier in the basement to keep the air dry

*Make sure seals on windows and doors are tight or recaulk

The post also tells you what to do if you find moisture in your basement. As I just did. Ugh. Gotta go reread that blog.
