You Can Put the Sales Tax You Save Toward Fixing the Doghouse

July 01, 2010

July is National Doghouse Repairs Month, Smart Irrigation Month, National Grilling Month and the month that sales tax goes down in Cook County.

It's National Doghouse Repairs Month, so ret roo rit! (Get to it!)

Starting today, the Cook County sales tax rate drops a half a percentage point, which means you will pay a half cent less on each dollar you spend. That’s 50 cents on every $100. Wow.

The new sales tax rate in suburban Cook County drops from 10 percent to 9.5 percent.

In the city, sales tax goes from a nation-high 10.25 percent to 9.75 percent. That percentage still ties Chicago with Los Angeles for highest big-city rate in the country.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency, more water is used in July than any other month, mostly on watering lawns and gardens.

Watering a sidewalk is a waste of water.

As a result, Smart Irrigation Month was created. The hope is that homeowners will take some time to find ways to be more water efficient while keeping your yard happy.

The EPA says the average American household uses approximately 30 percent of its water outside and that as much as 50 percent of that water is wasted due to evaporation, wind or runoff. Some homes lose up to 70 gallons of water a day.

Can’t imagine why July is National Grilling Month, but here’s a tip anyway from Liberty Mutual on what to do if you are using a propane grill and suspect a gas leak:

*Mix soap and water together.

*Brush the solution onto your grill’s hoses and hose connections.

*Check for bubbles. If you see them, your grill might have a gas leak.

*Turn off the grill and have it serviced before reusing.

*Order pizza.

Another nationally recognized theme this time of year is Air Conditioning Appreciation Days.

The air filter is one of the most important parts of your air conditioner.

Celebrated from July 3 through August 15, it’s meant for you to take a day to nurture your cooling friend. It might even save you some bucks.

The National Association of Realtors offers these tips for maintaining your air conditioner.

*Change the air filter: Preferably once a month while you are using it.

*Brush and vacuum the fan blades and fan enclosure area: When you remove the air filter, clean the fan blades and enclosure area to remove dust and debris.

*Clean indoor coil: Open the front panel and clean the coil with a dry rag or soft-brush attachment from your vacuum cleaner.

*Clean drain line: This is a big to-do and the NAR suggests getting help to perform this task. Check out the web site for more information.
