Web Site: Chicago the No. 1 Destination for the 4th

July 03, 2010

Priceline.com released its 2010 survey of the 50 most-popular destinations in the country for the 4th of July weekend, and Chicago’s Millennium Park, Loop and Grant Park area made No. 1.

The survey is based on more than 30,000 actual hotel bookings made by credit card and not just a preference poll, which the web site believes makes this survey more accurate.

The Taste of Chicago festival draws crowds from all over the world.

Last year, New Orleans was the most popular July 4th destination among Priceline customers. Thanks to BP, downtown New Orleans fell to No. 26. Another favorite beach destination, Destin, Florida, dropped off the list entirely this year.

Last year, Chicago’s Millennium Park, Loop and Grant Park venues made the list at No. 3. The Taste of Chicago and the city’s three fireworks shows on July 4th have helped put us in the lead spot. Chicago’s North Michigan Avenue and River North Area made No. 5, and the Lincoln Park community is No. 37.

“With the economy forcing many smaller towns to cut back or eliminate their fireworks displays, the beneficiaries are the big cities, like Chicago, Boston, New York City and Washington, D.C., that traditionally put on elaborate July 4th events,” said Priceline.com’s Brian Elk.
