Downtown Chicago the Backdrop for Action Thriller ~ Updated

July 09, 2010

I have something to tell you that might alter your decision on whether to go downtown this weekend: Parts of Chicago are about to be transformed into a movie set.

Transformers 3,” starring Shia Labeouf and Josh Duhamel, will be filming in Chicago through August 23, and the film crew will be shutting down Michigan Avenue this weekend to do it.

Now there's something you don't see on Michigan Ave. every day.

Starting Thursday, July 15 at 8 p.m., Michigan Avenue will be closed between Ontario Street and Wacker Drive until 5 a.m. Monday, July 19. Lower Michigan Avenue between Hubbard Street and Lower Wacker Drive will be closed for shooting during the same time period.

“It’s not every day we have a movie filming on the Michigan Avenue Bridge,” said Chicago Film Office Director Rich Moskal. “It takes a large effort to make this work. They’re going to be here through the middle of August, but this weekend will be the most challenging.”

The film is estimated to bring in about $20 million to our city’s economy while creating more than 200 jobs.

City officials say the film’s producers have been working with the city, businesses and residents to address traffic impacts and has employed street ambassadors and installed signs to assist in redirecting residents.

A detour will send northbound traffic from Randolph to Dearborn and southbound traffic to Clark Street at Ontario this weekend.

Remember that filming will force some CTA buses to reroute throughout the weekend. To find out more information, call (888) YOUR-CTA or visit www.transitchicago.com

As I said, filming is planned through August 23, so expect more issues to come. Check out www.alertchicago.com for traffic updates.

I, personally, wasn’t going downtown this weekend. But now that I know I can watch a movie being filmed …

By the way, how many movies can you think of that were shot in downtown Chicago? Here’s a start:

*Adventures in Babysitting

*Batman Begins (The Dark Knight)

*The Blues Brothers

*Damien – Omen II (at the Field Museum and Museum of Science and Industry!)

*Ferris Bueller’s Day Off

*Flatliners (Also the Museum of Science and Industry)

*The Fugitive

*The Untouchables

*The Weather Man

*When Harry Met Sally

*While You Were Sleeping

There are many more, as you can see by this list, but I wasn’t sure which were filmed in Chicago and which in downtown Chicago, which is what this list is all about.

Question ? Where & when might be a good time & place to bring the kids to watch some filming of the movie Transformers 3 ?? Thanks, DeeDee

This might be a great weekend to show the kids a little Hollywood in Chicago. Michigan Avenue will still be open to foot traffic throughout the weekend, and there will be helicopters and stunt parachutists raining down at different times on Saturday and Sunday.
