What’s All the Fuss About? See For Yourself!

July 18, 2010

No, this is not part of the Transformers 3 movie being filmed in downtown Chicago. It’s a piece of contemporary art currently on display in Chicago’s Pritzker Park.

It’s called EYE, and it’s a lifelike, three-story, eyeball sculpture created by internationally renowned and Chicago-based artist Tony Tasset.

Tony Tasset and his blue eyes

Situated on the corner of State Street and Van Buren, the 30-foot-tall, three-dimensional model has a blue iris like Tasset’s and is made of steel reinforced fiberglass.

Tasset also designed a companion piece called CARDINAL, a display of 156 street banners showing our Illinois state bird — the red cardinal — flying in a bright blue sky.

The flags unfold like a flipbook on State Street lamp posts from Congress Parkway north to Wacker Drive.

These pieces are the focus of Chicago Loop Alliance’s (CLA) Art Loop 2010, an event in which a new work by an important artist is commissioned.

As part of the program, there are also opportunities to take advantage of free family and educational programming as well as discounts and promotions created specifically for this initiative.

This is CLA’s inaugural celebration, and the hopes are it will occur each summer with a different artist.

EYE and CARDINAL will be on display in Chicago through October 31, 2010.
