HAPPY unit once owned by BIRTHDAY-boy OBAMA has new tenants

August 04, 2010

I’m writing this story as an excuse to say Happy Birthday to the President.

Dennis Rodkin of Chicago Magazine is reporting that the Chicago condo where Michelle and Barack Obama lived from 1993 to 2005 has been rented by new tenants.

The first-floor condo is in Eastview Park, a gated community of six-flats around 54th Street and South Shore Drive.

The Obamas renovated their Eastview Park kitchen with new cabinets, a breakfast bar and yellow paint.

After marrying in October of 1992, the Obamas bought the four-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath unit in August of 1993 for $277,500.

Their life in that condo proved to be positive: While there, both their daughters were born, Barack became an Illinois State Senator and their Chicago real estate appreciated.

In April of 2005, the family sold the condo for $415,000 and moved to their current Hyde Park home.

The condo purchaser was jazz musician Kurt Elling and his wife, Jennifer. Elling, 42, a Chicago native who grew up in Rockford, has been named Male Vocalist of the Year from 2000 through 2010 by DownBeat Magazine.

The Ellings are renting out the condo for $2,400 a month. Their real estate agent told Rodkin that the new renters are trying to sell their Chicago home and signed a one-year lease, which means the place will be available again soon.

Today is President Barack Obama’s 49th birthday. He is spending it in his hometown of Chicago with some friends. His wife and kids are not accompanying him.

Tomorrow, the President will attend three fundraisers, including a $30,000-per-person party at the Chicago home of real-estate mogul Neil Bluhm.

President Obama, we wish you are very HAPPY BIRTHDAY! The whole country hopes it’s a great year for you.
