Bike-Sharing Program Good for You and the City

August 17, 2010

Want an eco-friendly to see Chicago? Ride a bike!

No bike? No problem! Borrow one from Chicago B-cycle, the bicycle-sharing system.

Chicago B-cycle is a program designed to help Chicago residents and visitors increase daily activity while reducing carbon emissions.

Chicago B-cycle recently launched with 100 bicycles at six B-stations around the city.

To “borrow” a bike, you simply purchase a membership online or at a B-station, pick a bike from a B-station, ride the bike, park the bike at a B-station.

Rides more than an hour incur an additional $5 fee.

There are three membership levels — 30-day ($35), 60-day ($45) and 90-day ($55) — and each can be purchased online or at a station.

There is a $10 discount for students and seniors. Seniors must call (773) 673-2000 to take advantage of the discount.

Temporary passes are also available and can be purchased only at B-stations with a credit card. Rates are $10 for the first hour and $5 per additional hour.

B-station locations:

*McCormick Place

*Museum Campus

*Buckingham Fountain

*The Chicago Park District administrative offices

*Daley Plaza

*John Hancock Center

Officials with operator Bike and Roll rental hope to have 30 rental stations throughout the city by next spring.

“Chicago has a national reputation as one of the best large cities in the United States for bicycling. We’ve been working for many years to lessen traffic by offering alternatives to using the automobile,” said Mayor Richard M. Daley. “My goal is to make Chicago the most bicycle-friendly city in the United States.”

By the way, Chicago B-cycle is BYOH: Bring your own helmet.
