Stephani Offers Double Dose of Advice at SSHBA

Tom Stephani, a nationally recognized speaker in the home-building industry, spoke at Southwest Suburban Home Builder Association Sales and Marketing Council Meeting in the afternoon and then at their General Membership Meeting over dinner.

The sessions were very different in content and valuable to the attendees based on where we are in the market right now.

The afternoon session, for the SMC, was about “Achieving Balance in an Unbalanced World,” and discussed ways to be more effective and focused on your life and happiness in today’s fast-paced world. Tom gave several tips on reducing stress, managing your time, evaluating your self and your life, and staying organized.

It was a great seminar that yielded several ‘soundbytes’ I really enjoyed. Here are a few of my favorites:

1. Stress is not what you want to avoid, it is somewhat motivational – DISTRESS is what to avoid, as it is full of anguish.

2. Cheer up, things are getting worse at a slower pace.

3. Schedule your priorities, don’t prioritize your schedule.

4. You can’t manage time, but you can manage your use of time.

5. A dream without a plan is only a wish.

These are all great sayings, and they made me think about ways to reduce stress and stay motivated and effective.

Other techniques include:

*Re-center the workday so you can have both a start and an end

*Work fewer nights and weekends; those benefit your family as well

*Eat right


The evening event was also full of good information related to the new-home industry and the Chicago real estate market. Although the news was not good, it was right on target. Hopefully we will be coming out of this.
