Think Chicago’s Gardening Season is Over? No Way!

"Hortus in Urbe" is Latin for "Garden in the City."

Summer might be coming to a close, but that doesn’t mean you have to hang up your hoe.

The Chicago Park is offering a variety of upcoming workshops for Chicago homeowners and garden enthusiasts who don’t want to be held back by colder temperatures.

Where: All the workshops will be held at the Kilbourn Park & Organic Greenhouse, located at 3501 N. Kilbourn Avenue in Chicago.

Cost: Each workshop has a fee of $20, and pre-registration is required.

What: Growing Organic Vegetables in Your Own Backyard

When: Saturday, September 18; 10 a.m. to noon

Why: Learn how to grow your own food, and receive advice on organic gardening techniques and soil improvement.

When: Saturday, September 25; 10 a.m. to noon

Why: Honey, urban beekeeping is a fun hobby with challenges and rewards. Learn about them here.

When: Saturday, October 2; 10 a.m. to noon

Why: Learn what plants do better in colder weather and how to use simple resources to accomplish your goals.

What: Indoor Composting by Urban Worm Girl

When: Saturday, October 9; 10 a.m. to noon

Why: Learn simple, clean and odorless methods of composting your food scraps and paper waste in your home, condo or apartment.

What: Organic Oyster Mushrooms Cultivation

When: Saturday, October 23; 10 a.m. to noon

Why: Learn how to grown edible gourmet mushrooms in your basement or garage.

What: Growing Microgreens in Your Home

When: Saturday, October 30; 10 a.m. to noon

Why: Don’t have garden space? Don’t need it! Learn how to grow delicious, leafy greens in your small space inside or out.
