Chicago Real Estate Puts Chicagoan on List

The annual list of the richest Americans just came out, and the highest-ranking Chicago person made part of his fortune in Chicago real estate.

Forbes Magazine released its 2010 list of the 400 richest people in America this week.

Sam Zell is the richest Chicagoan.

Chicago real estate investor Sam Zell, of Equity Residential, topped the list of people from our town at No. 60.

Zell, 69, whose income increased from $3.8 billion in 2009 to $4.4 billion this year, actually shares the 60th spot with 70-year-old, New York fashion designer Ralph Lauren.

Other Chicagoans who made the list, including their ages, cities of residence, industries and 2010 incomes:

Bill Gates has been the richest person in America for 16 straight years.

Forbes chose the richest Americans by estimating each one’s assets, including stakes in public and privately held companies, real estate, art, yachts and planes.

The results show that the collective net worth of America’s richest fell $300 billion in the past 12 months; from $1.57 trillion to $1.27 trillion.

It’s only the fifth time since 1982 that the Forbes 400 has posted a decline.

Atop the list of richest Americans, for the 16th straight year, is Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, 54, who will net an income of $54 billion in 2010. Gates, who is actually a wonderful philanthropist, resides in Medina, Washington.

Eighty-year-old Warren Buffett of Berkshire Hathaway is #2 on Forbes list at $45 billion; California resident Larry Ellison, 66, of Oracle, made #3 with $27 billion; and a woman, 55-year-old Walmart heir Christy Walton of Jackson, Wyoming, ranked #4 with $24 billion.

Rounding out the top 10: #5 Charles Koch, energy, $21.5 billion; #5 David Koch, energy, $21.5 billion; #7 Jim Walton, Walmart, $20.1 billion, #8 Alice Walton, Walmart, $20 billion; #9 S. Robson Walton, Walmart, $19.7 billion; #10 Michael Bloomberg, Bloomberg, $18 billion.

According to Forbes, the 10 richest Americans lost a combined $39.2 billion this year.

But, don’t worry, they still have a lot of money.
