Illinois Residents Will Paint The Town this Weekend, Literally

October 16, 2010

An Illinois neighborhood considered to contain the “longest Main Street in America” is getting a free makeover this weekend.

Paint the Town Sign“Paint the Town” is a community project designed to inspire residents to invest time, energy and pride into their hometowns.

More than 1,000 volunteers are expected to participate this weekend for the Paint the Town event in the city of Belleville, where 60 residential and commercial buildings on Main Street between 17th and Oak Streets in the heart of the community will be painted.

Home Depot is providing the supplies for the project and Glidden Paint has donated more than 4,000 gallons of Glidden Premium exterior paint in 12 popular colors:

Delilah lives in a 102-year-old farmhouse in Port Orchard, Washington, which she rebuilt using recycled materials from an old high school. The 51-year-old mother of 11 – eight of them are adopted – started the first Paint the Town project in her small town last year.

Belleville was chosen this year from more than 100 cities because of its:

*Nearly 200-year-old history

*Civic pride

*Sense of commitment to its residents through its city managements and services

*History of volunteerism within the community

*Physical characteristics, including the longest Main Street in America

Belleville, which means “beautiful city,” is located in the southern portion of Illinois in St. Clair County.

The October 16-17 painting party will include music from local groups and larger acts, including Alex Band on Saturday and Air Supply on Sunday.

“We are excited about the opportunity to help the citizens of Belleville transform their Main Street into a colorful and energetic part of town,” said Rob Horton, vice president of marketing for the maker of Glidden paint, Akzo Nobel Paints LLC. “It is very rewarding to be a part of a community that has dedicated preservationists, takes pride in its old and new neighborhoods, and provides a good environment for raising families.”
