A McHenry Tree Will Stand Tall in Chicago This Holiday Season

October 26, 2010

It’s not quite Halloween in Chicago yet, but the city already knows where it’s getting its Christmas tree.

A more than 75-year-old tree from McHenry has been chosen to be the official Christmas Tree for Daley Center Plaza this year.

Seventy-four Chicago area residents entered their conifers in a first-ever contest that searched for the perfect tree to be illuminated in Daley Plaza on November 24.

Three finalists were chosen that best met the tree criteria, Chicagoans voted online and a winner was chosen.

A 70-foot blue spruce from the John Colomer family in McHenry will be the official tree in Daley Plaza this holiday season.

The giant tree is on a soon-to-be developed lot owned by the Colomer family that is located across the street from the Montini Catholic Middle School in the oldest part of the city of McHenry.

“A tree that has had such a long life and whose beauty has long been admired by so many in the community deserves to be recognized and be chosen as the 2010 City of Chicago Christmas Tree,” said John Colomer.

The spruce will be cut down on November 4 and delivered to Daley Plaza the next day.

The Colomer family will join Mayor Richard M. Daley in flipping the switch to light the tree during the 97th Annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at Daley Plaza at 5 p.m. on November 24. It will be on display through January 8.

The Colomers will also take home LED lights courtesy of Underwriter Laboratories for their winning tree.

Wonder if there will be a contest for a Chanukah bush or a Kwanzaa plant? If so, we’ll bring you the latest.

I have lived in McHenry all of my 54 years. I have driven by and admired this blue spruce tree for years. My mother and I were driving by at the time it was being trimmed. I was freaking out. I later learned that it had won a Daley Plaza Christmas Tree Contest. I was thrilled. Congratulations to the Colomer family.
