Joe Biden unveils the Home Energy Score program

Vice President Joe Biden has launched a new federal program called “Home Energy Score” that will help homeowners save energy and money.

Developed by the Energy Department, the voluntary Home Energy Score Program will determine how energy efficient a home is by rating it with a score between one and 10. A score of 10 will go to those who keep their homes the most comfortable while using the least amount of energy. If you get a one, you’ve got some work to do. Chances are we’re all somewhere in between.

Under the program:

*A trained and certified contractor will use a standardized assessment tool to evaluate your home

*Then compare your home to others in the region

*Then offer customized, cost-effective tips to homeowners on how you can save more energy while making your home more comfortable

*Then provide estimations on your utility bill savings, payback period and greenhouse gas emission reduction for each improvement.

Pretty cool.

Chicago homeowners will have to wait for their scores: The program will first be tested in 10 areas before being refined and going nationwide in 2011.

Those pilot communities:

*Charlottesville, Virginia

*Allegheny County, Pennsylvania

*Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts

*Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska

*Portland, Oregon

*South Carolina

*Eagle County, Colorado

“The Home Energy Score will help make energy efficiency easy and accessible to America’s families by providing them with straightforward and reliable information about their homes’ energy performance and specific, cost-effective energy efficiency improvements that will save them money on their monthly energy bills,” said U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Steven Chu.

Can’t wait to sign up next year.
