Home Appliance Facility Brings Jobs to Chicago

November 13, 2010

There’s a whole world of Whirlpool right here in a piece of historic Chicago real estate.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony this week marked the grand opening of the new “World of Whirlpool Corporation,” an interactive, state-of-the-art facility created for designers, trade customers, sales associates, people of influence in the home appliance industry and the media who cover it.

It’s basically a year-round trade show.

At close to 30,000 square feet and located on the eighth floor of the historic Reid Murdoch Center, 325 N. LaSalle St., the center will add 15 new jobs to the local economy.

“Since the recession began, more than 100 businesses have expanded or located downtown and in our neighborhoods, creating much needed jobs,” said Mayor Richard M. Daley at the ceremony. “Today, Whirlpool — the world’s leading manufacturer of major home appliances — joins that group.”

Daley said he was especially pleased that Whirlpool honored Chicago’s mission to be the most environmentally friendly city in the country by using green principles while renovating the space.

Construction waste was recycled throughout the eco-friendly project, which also includes:

*A large outdoor space with an herb garden

*Kitchens and laundry rooms

*Outdoor entertaining areas

The facility will house a variety of meetings, product displays, training sessions, cooking demonstrations and events.

“Opening in Chicago, located just across Lake Michigan from Whirlpool Corporation World Headquarters made sense to our business,” said Marc Bitzer, president of North America, Whirlpool Corporation. “The location offers a central travel hub for trade customers and industry influencers from throughout the world, while the city offers a beautiful backdrop and a vibrant design community.”
