Artifex Builders Wins Gold for New Chicago Home

November 17, 2010

Chicagoland Real Estate Forum congratulates Artifex Builders for winning a Gold Key Award in the category of “Excellence in New Construction Custom Home; 3,501 – 4,200 square feet” for a home at 1822 Barry in Chicago.

The design goal was to build a striking new Lakeview home for a young, growing family that enjoys hosting and entertaining family from the East coast. The young couple and two preschool daughters requested whimsical features and bold colors in a home having many classical features with a contemporary twist. The family also desired a “Smart House” that could be operated from anywhere in the country.

Artifex Builders accomplished these goals by providing a guest suite in the lower level for visitors and building a media center with wet bar and open kitchen plan on the first floor for entertaining. Whimsical features include hand-scraped white oak flooring, “Alice in Wonderland” glass tile, glittering purple glass tile and stone that looks like leather and prairie straw grass in many of the baths. The home is also fully wired to control lights, heating/cooling and music via remote control and the Internet.

The greatest challenge was incorporating many features on a standard city of Chicago lot. Artifex Builders responded by building many closet systems, mudroom and fireplace built-ins, a kitchen bench/table assembly and a huge, master bedroom dresser/entertainment center. We also built a Jack ‘n’ Jill bath for the girls and added bonus storage space in the attic.

The architect on this project was Steve Besch.

The Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago Key Awards were created in 1972 to recognize excellence in housing design, architecture, interior merchandising, remodeling and landscaping. It has since evolved into one of the premier housing programs in the country.
