Great Rooms Wins Gold for Gonnella Home Renovation

November 17, 2010

Chicagoland Real Estate Forum congratulates Great Rooms Designers & Builders for winning a Gold Key Award in the category of “Excellence in Remodeling; $200,001 – $500,001” for the Gonnella residence’s renovation.

The client is a young, growing suburban family. Their Realtor introduced them to Great Rooms after showing them a very dated yet charming 1978 Cape Cod style house.

Great Rooms walked the property with the client and put together a preliminary budget that reflected the client’s “wish list.” In addition to updating everything form the exterior materials to installing new hardwood and trim throughout the entire interior to completely renovating the kitchen and baths, we suggested bumping out the back of the house to increase the home’s livability and overall value.

So, in addition to updating every material on the exterior and interior of the house, we put an addition on the back house and reversed the location of the existing mud room and family room so that an “open” floor plan, from the kitchen to the family room, could be achieved. Additionally, attic space above the garage was finished in order to provide a much more functional master suite.

Hardwood flooding was laid throughout the first floor and the existing hardwood on the second refinished, all new interior trim and doors were installed, the walls, ceiling and trim painted, the expanded kitchen completely renovated with custom cabinets, natural stone counter tops, ceramic back splash tile, gourmet appliances, etc. The baths were gutted (the master enlarged and relocated), the mechanicals replaced and so on.

Given its appropriate detailing, the renovation fits in nicely within the existing residence, raising its functionality and level of finish comparable to something that would be built today.

The Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago Key Awards were created in 1972 to recognize excellence in housing design, architecture, interior merchandising, remodeling and landscaping. It has since evolved into one of the premier housing programs in the country.
