Great Rooms Wins Gold for Michaelides Master Bath

November 17, 2010

Chicagoland Real Estate Forum congratulates Great Rooms Designers & Builders for winning a Gold Key Award in the category of “Excellence in Remodeling Bath Under $25,000” for the Michaelides residence’s bath renovation.

The client is soon-to-be empty-nesters who wanted to treat themselves to a luxurious, spa-style master bath. They are the original owners of their 1992, high-end, tract-style homes, which featured very basic finishes throughout the kitchen and baths.

The original space had some functional issues including a commode door that opened into the small shower, an over-sized tub with an undersized tub deck— neither of which was proportionate to the space — an overall lack of storage and significant drywall cracks in the walls and ceilings.

The design solution involved moving the commode room door to the adjacent wall so that it doesn’t compete with the shower space, increasing the size of the shower and adding a seat, decreasing the size of the tub and tub deck and relocating the tub filler so that it is easier to access the tub, adding a vanity tower, etc. All high-end finishes were installed including natural stone tile, custom cabinetry including a storage tower and framed mirrors, nickel plumbing fixtures and natural stone counter tops.

The biggest design challenge revolved around maintaining the existing locations of the windows while attempting to increase the size of the shower.

This master bathroom renovation resulted in a beautiful, spa-style bath for the owners that will ultimately increase the value of their home.

The Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago Key Awards were created in 1972 to recognize excellence in housing design, architecture, interior merchandising, remodeling and landscaping. It has since evolved into one of the premier housing programs in the country.
