Great Rooms Wins Gold for Schultz Kitchen Renovation

November 17, 2010

Chicagoland Real Estate Forum congratulates Great Rooms Designers & Builders for winning a Gold Key Award in the category of “Excellence in Remodeling Kitchen; $75,001 – $100,000” for the Schultz residence’s kitchen renovation.

The client is a young, suburban family with growing children. They purchased their 1954 house approximately 10 years ago but wanted to wait to remodel the dated kitchen until all of the children were in school full time.

In addition to wanting to update their kitchen/powder room/pantry area, the family’s secondary objective was to create a more functional “heart of the home” and increased organization. With their children growing older, the family needed to incorporate a mud room into this area in which one had never existed.

The design solution involved removing most of the interior walls in this general area so we could start with a blank slate. We reversed the location of the current powder room and pantry to create a larger pantry with greater accessibility to cooking products for the cook and increased privacy as well as a more central location within the house for the commode; widened the opening from the breakfast room to the family room to create an “open” concept between the two, and allocated an area at the back of the breakfast room/kitchen (closest to the detached garage) for the mud room, which now features built-ins, a storage/coat closet, bench, etc…

The kitchen was outfitted with hardwood flooring; painted and stained cherry, Amish, custom cabinets; commercial appliances; six-burner cook top, double oven, wine refrigerator, dishwasher, etc.; natural stone counter tops and a tile back splash.

One significant design challenge involved relocating the waste pipe, which ran through a soffit separating the kitchen from the breakfast room, into the floor joists above.

The client refers to the renovated areas within her house as her “happy place.”

The Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago Key Awards were created in 1972 to recognize excellence in housing design, architecture, interior merchandising, remodeling and landscaping. It has since evolved into one of the premier housing programs in the country.
