Great Rooms Wins Gold for Voigt Deerfield Home Renovation

November 17, 2010

Chicagoland Real Estate Forum congratulates Great Rooms Designers & Builders for winning a Gold Key Award in the category of “Excellence in Remodeling Whole House Under $200,000” for the Voigt residence’s renovation.

The client is a young, growing family that purchased their very small bungalow style house in Deerfield back when they had only one child. As their family grew, they intended to move to a larger home but, due to the declining real estate market, were never able to sell their existing house. That’s when Great Rooms got involved …

We came up with a design that solution consisted of adding an entirely new second floor addition (complete demolition and removal of the existing second story); rebuilding the first floor (complete demolition of its interior and exterior (down to the studs); replacing all of the mechanical systems (plumbing, HVAC, electric) as well as the water/sewer connection from the main; all new drywall and trim throughout the house; all new “custom” kitchen and baths; and all new maintenance-free exterior materials (including Hardie board siding, 30-year asphalt shingle roof and standing metal seamed roof, Marvin windows and Simpson exterior doors.)

The most significant design constraint involved working around the extremely small lot size, which precluded us from adding onto the first floor at all. Therefore, we could only go “up” and took the house from approximately 750 to 1,500 square feet. The clients have a somewhat modern/craftsman design style that emphasizes clean lines and simple detailing. We combined these styles with contemporary finishes such as polished concrete counter tops, white flat panel cabinetry and metal-seamed porch roofing. It’s an amazing transformation; both from an architectural and functional standpoint.

The end result is a beautiful and incredibly “livable” home. The clients love it.

The Home Builders Association of Greater Chicago Key Awards were created in 1972 to recognize excellence in housing design, architecture, interior merchandising, remodeling and landscaping. It has since evolved into one of the premier housing programs in the country.
