Introducing Chicago’s Most Expensive House

November 19, 2010

There is a Chicago area home for sale with an asking price of $23 million, and that’s after a $5-million price cut.

The limestone home, known as Le Grand Rêve, is a 27,000-square-foot mansion in Winnetka and Chicago’s most expensive home on the market.

The chateau, located on 2.04 acres at 68 Locust Road in a portion of unincorporated Cook County in the North Shore suburb, is owned by commercial real estate executive Sherwin Jarol and his wife, Deborah, who cut the asking price from $28 million on Thursday. According to the Chicago Tribune’s Bob Goldsborough, the two-story home had been unofficially listed in 2009 for $32 million.

Built in 2008 by renowned architect Richard Landry, the 20-room home was modeled after the Chateau Villette outside Paris and boasts:

*Six bedrooms; four on the second floor, one on the main and one on the lower level

*Six full baths and four half baths

*A grand entrance with a two-story rotunda and Tiffany dome

*An enclosed porch with marble flooring

*A Great Room, library, den and gallery

*A theatre room and a recreation room

*Finished basement and attic

*Nine fireplaces

*Exercise room

*Sauna/steam room, hot tub and bidet

*Balcony and patio

*Wine cellar

*In-ground pool

*Nine-car, heated, attached garage and a heated driveway

*Dog run/invisible fence

Aren’t you dying to know what your property taxes would be on the estate?

Drum roll, please.

The 2008 tax bill: $112,560

The next closest Chicago area home for sale in that price region is Lansdowne, a Lake Bluff mansion that includes 24 rooms in 14,845 square feet on 21 acres and a price tag of $18,977,000.

Of course, the tax bill on that property — at $236,074 in 2009 — more than doubles the bill at our chateau in Winnetka.

The headline for this story teases about “The Most Expensive Home in Chicago.” Winnetka is not Chicago. If you’re going to write about homes in Chicago, then please make sure they fall within the city limits.

Actually, this home is the most expensive home in Chicago too! But I’ll watch out for that in the future.
