Be Thankful For Your Home on This Holiday

December 03, 2010

Today, December 3, is National Roof Over Your Head Day.

A silly holiday but a good one nonetheless. Today is a great day to appreciate the roof over your head that keeps you warm and safe and out of the elements.

Not everyone is lucky enough to have a roof over their heads. Homelessness is a problem of mass proportions in our country and our state of Illinois.

Mug that says National Roof-Over-Your-Head DayToday would be a good day to volunteer your time or make a contribution to a homeless shelter. Chicago Coalition for the Homeless and Habitat for Humanity are a couple resources to check out.

Speaking of Habitat for Humanity, there’s a contest going on called the American Home Shield Challenge for Change in which the three Habitat for Humanity affiliates that receive the most votes will get $25,000, $15,000 and $10,000 donations for their neighborhood revitalization initiatives.

You can vote at once a day through January 31, 2011, but if you vote today, on National Roof Over Your Head Day, your vote will count twice.

“This unique holiday reminds us to be thankful for the basic things we often take for granted, such as the safety and protection that proper housing provides,” says Nicole Ritchie, Director of Communications for AHS, one of the nation’s leading home warranty companies. “Habitat for Humanity staff and volunteers help provide shelter to thousands of Americans each year.

“On December 3, we encourage everyone to show gratitude for the ‘roof over their head’ by going to and casting their vote for their favorite Habitat affiliate and help them continue their outstanding service.”

There are 15 Habitat affiliates in the contest, including two in the Chicago area:

*Habitat for Humanity Chicago South Suburbs

*Habitat for Humanity Lake County

After you vote at today, take a few moments to appreciate all the things that you have, starting with your home and the roof over your head.
