A Green Idea for Chicago Real Estate

As we all know by now, green is the new black . . . at least ecologically speaking. Many new condos and houses in Chicago are now required (or at least strongly recommended) to adopt environmentally-friendly technology in order to preserve the planet.

But what kinds of technologies are available for us to use?

The Museum of Science and Industry can answer that question for you with their Smart Home: Green + Wired exhibition.

It is not just a regular exhibition with your standard objects on a display. Instead, this is a real house crafted with the environment in mind.

This three-story house was designed by Michelle Kauffmann Designs and built by All American Homes and reflects the lifestyle of a typical 21st century Chicago couple. It is a modern house built with natural elements and colors. The green technology that is used in the house is used to reduce the energy consumption as much as possible.

One piece of very crucial technology used for in this house is the wind turbine. Since this is the windy city, we might as well use wind to create energy for our homes. A few other examples of the technologies in the exhibition include:

* A real-time energy tracking monitor so homeowners know how much power they have been using and how much they can save.

* An automatic touch-screen system to control some features of the house like lighting and temperature.

* Modern kitchen counter tops that allow homeowners to use and charge devices with wireless technology.

Furthermore, what’s a house without a garden? Yes, this house also has a garden planted with organic vegetables and native Midwestern plants. Just imagine fresh salad just outside the door.

And since everything is organic, watering the garden is easy and free with a rainwater collection system. Of course, composting is featured in this garden so what comes from nature, goes back to nature.

This special exhibit at the Museum of Science and Industry lasts until January 3, 2011, so you still have plenty of time to see the greenest house in Chicago.
