Before You Sign a Lease on that Chicago Home, Visit This Site

December 26, 2010

There are plenty of places online to search for apartments and homes to rent, now there’s a place to find out where not to.

DoNotRent.com is a forum for renters to unveil their negative renting experiences.

The reviews, from all over the country, are based on tenant experiences, apartment renters, on- or off-campus student housing, rental homes, vacation rentals and more.

Users can rate their housing experience ranging from “Not That Bad” to “Absolute Nightmare.”

Positive experiences are welcome as well.

“The reviews that users post are meant to help future tenants become more aware of possible issues and ask the agent or landlord tough questions before they sign a lease,” said Mike Cerny, a Chicago-based real estate professional and co-founder of Donotrent.com.

The review side of the web site is built around a social networking core, which includes a messaging page, a blog page and a classified ads section. Donotrent.com is connected to Facebook and the AddThis sharing service.

Donotrent.com compares itself to the popular review site Yelp. The difference is that this site focuses solely on rental property reviews. And, it’s not a site a real estate owner would like to see his name.
