Spring Selling Season Starting NOW!

January 02, 2011

A home for sale sign with the word SOLD over it.You may be under the impression that the spring real estate market (the hottest time to buy or sell a home) starts in the, well, spring. That’s not the case, so you’d better get ready now if you’re planning to sell your home in 2011. According to real estate expert Ilyce Glink, frequent contributor to the

Equifax Personal Finance Blog, the spring real estate season actually starts on January 2.

Glink’s recent Equifax post, “

How to Sell Your Home in 2011,” gives some pointers. She suggests you start by finding the best real estate agent for you. This will be a person who has a history of selling homes in your neighborhood and in your price range. He or she will also take an aggressive approach to marketing and showing your home.

But your agent can’t do it all. You’re going to need to take steps to get your house ready for potential buyers to see. Glink suggests you move out the clutter, including out of season clothes in your closets and extra “stuff” sitting around on your kitchen and bathroom countertops. For things you want to keep but are taking up too much space – including extra furniture pieces, books or boxes of holiday decorations – you may want to rent a storage unit until you’re ready to move them into your new home.

Speaking of holiday decorations – Glink says to take yours down before the January 2nd spring selling season begins. And consider planting some winter-hardy blooms. If we’re going to call it the spring selling season, we just as well make it look like spring.

Many additional, inexpensive ways to get your Chicago home ready to sell are available at the

Equifax Personal Finance Blog. What will you do to get your home ready? What have you seen other homeowners do (or fail to do) that you would like to pass on to others?
