Best Place in the U.S. to Raise Kids: Right Here

January 17, 2011

A Chicago suburb has been chosen as the best town to raise kids in Illinois.

Businessweek.com has released its list of “The Best Places to Raise Your Kids” and chose North suburban Niles as the top spot in Illinois.

In fact, the way the story was written, it sounds like the magazine is choosing Niles as the No. 1 place in the country to raise children.

This is Bloomberg Businessweek’s fifth annual survey, but this year’s was different than the others. Instead of including large urban areas, the 2011 report focused on 5,418 middle-income cities, towns and villages with populations larger than the state median but no more than 50,000.

Niles, which records a median family income of $73,532, has a population of 29,207.

Leaning Tower of Niles

A landmark worth living near.

Why Niles is No. 1:

*Affordable housing

*Low property taxes (significant revenue from sales taxes helps keep property taxes low)

*Low crime rate

*Public transportation (there’s free bus service within the village from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.)

*20 park sites

*Several shopping centers (including Golf Mill Mall)

*Schools that perform above the state average (Niles Township High School District 219 was ranked No. 1 in the country for its fine arts program in 2007)

*Award-winning Teen Center (offers homework assistance and social activities)

*Employment opportunities (its unemployment rate dropped to 7.8 in October)

*Ethnically diverse (14 percent are Asian)

*Leaning Tower of Niles (an old water tower that is now a half-size replica of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, apparently it’s a landmark worth living near.)

The second best city to raise your kids in Illinois? Bensenville.
