January 19, 2011

You have to think this Chicago home is beautifully decorated.

Nate Berkus, the interior designer who rose to fame under Oprah Winfrey’s wing, has put his Gold Coast condo on the market for $2.65 million.

Astor-Banks buildingThe 3980-square-foot home is located in the vintage Astor-Banks building, 1325 North Astor Street, Chicago, a 14-story high rise with 12 full-floor residences that was built in 1928.

Berkus added his touch to the three-bedroom, four-bathroom home, with:

*New hardwood floors

*Reconfigured master suite

*Completely rehabbed master bath with custom English tub

*New electrical

*New kitchen backsplash and appliances

The pet-friendly condo, which has been featured in Chicago Magazine and Elle Decor, includes a parking space, an enormous storage room, two fireplaces and two-zone air conditioning. Not all units in the building have air conditioning.

Nate Berkus, 39, was making a decent living as a Chicago designer when Oprah Winfrey invited him on her show. That catapulted his career, and now Berkus designs his own line of home decorating products, hosts his own TV show, called The Nate Berkus Show, and has authored a book, “Home Rules: Transform the Place You Live into a Place You’ll Love.”

Owning a condo once lived in by this guru of home decorating is worth the price in spades, though there are a couple other numbers you need to consider with this beauty:

*Current monthly assessments are $3,816, which includes heat, water, common insurance, doorman, scavenger and snow removal.

*The tax bill for 2009 on this unit was $29,162,36.

You could buy a lot of Nate Berkus decorative pillows with that money.
