Events Worth Leaving Your Chicago Home For This Weekend

There’s lots to do around Chicago this weekend, and I’m not just talking about the big game on Sunday.

Here are some of the highlights:

*The Spring Home Improvement & Remodeling Expo is set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, January 21, 22 and 23 at Prairie Stone Sports & Wellness Center, 5050 Sedge Blvd., Hoffman Estates. The most successful Home Expo offer hundreds of exhibits and top professionals that can help you with everything home. There’s free admission and free parking, along with live entertainment, food, giveaways, kid’s activities and huge discounts on all products and services. The Spring Flower Show at the Lincoln Park Conservatory will be a breath of fresh air this winter.

*Winter Refuge: The Spring Flower Show kicks off on Saturday, January 22 at the Lincoln Park Conservatory, 2391 N. Stockton Drive, Chicago. The free show in the well-heated Conservatory will offer a nice diversion from Chicago’s dreary weather as well as a changing selection of spring blooming plants, flowering annuals and flowering perennials. The show will be there through May 8; hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week. Visit explorechicago.org for more information.

*All Wright: A special lecture entitled, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Public Buildings in Chicago: From the Rookery to Midway Gardens will be presented by Cheryl Bachand, Senior Lecturer of the Frank Lloyd Wright Preservation Trust. The free lecture will discuss Wright’s contribution to Chicago architecture through buildings designed for commerce, entertainment and worship. Set for 1 p.m. at the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, 5807 South Woodlawn Ave., Chicago, the lecture will also take place at the Sullivan Center, 33 South State Street, 7th Floor, Chicago, on Wednesday, January 26 at 1 p.m. Visit gowright.org for more information.

*Gardening Opportunities: Take comfort in this weather by thinking ahead to spring. The Chicago Park District is hosting Seed Swap, a free event in which you can swap seeds with other gardeners. This class is set for 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 22 at the Kilbourn Park & Organic Greenhouse, 3501 N. Kilbourn, Chicago.

Right after, in the same location, from 10 a.m. to noon, will be a workshop called Seed Starting Basics. Taught by Master Gardener Nancy Benjamin, this class will teach you the basics of seed starting. The cost is $10 and only cash will be accepted. *Free Food: Green Grocer Chicago, one of Chicago’s premier organic food stores, is celebrating its third anniversary on Sunday, January 23 by giving away tons of free stuff. From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., different vendors will pass out their goodies. Come throughout the day; vendors will change out every three hours. Green Grocer Chicago is located at 1402 W. Grand in Chicago.
