Have you ever seen a building being razed? Want to from the privacy of your Chicago home?

Demolition began this week of a building in Joliet that will eventually become the site for Joliet Junior College’s new City Center Campus.

The White Store

The White Store doesn't look like this anymore.

A live web cam is broadcasting the demolition and you can watch it happen.

The 102-year-old, four-story building that’s coming down was a former clothing factory called the White Store, located at 235 N. Chicago Street in downtown Joliet. Allegedly a site used to make weapons during World War II, the building more recently housed a local furniture store.

Demolition on the site was supposed to begin last fall, but a discovery of asbestos pushed it off until this week.

Joliet Junior College (JJC) is the nation’s first public community college. Its $42-million, 10-story City Center Campus will include JJC’s nationally renowned culinary arts and hospitality programs and is expected to bring more than 500 new students to the school.

Members of the Joliet Historic Preservation Commission had tried to save the White Store, but school officials felt restoring it would have been too costly.

Groundbreaking for the new campus building is scheduled for April 26.

Demolition of the White Store could take about 20 days. And you can watch the action from the warmth of your home by visiting jjc.edu.
