Century-Old Chicago Home Better Than New After Green Rehab

February 23, 2011

Now here’s a good use for an old, foreclosed Chicago home.

This Thursday and Saturday, the Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago (NHS) is hosting its first Practical Green Home Open House.

The single-family home is a more than 100-year-old formerly foreclosed property that was saved from demolition and updated with the latest energy-efficient mechanics.

Now, the home performs better than new construction.

The open house, sponsored by State Farm Insurance, shows off the three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bath home that is loaded with green amenities yet still affordably priced.

In fact, the rehab, once priced at $195,000, is now just $149,900.

Some of the green improvements include:

This green home is more than 100 years old, completely updated and for sale.

*A high-efficiency water heater/furnace with vents that lead outside to aid in fire prevention and to rid the home of harmful gases

*Cellulose and blown-in insulation

*Low VOC paint

*Dual flush toilets

*Bamboo flooring

*Recycled content carpet

*Cement board siding

*A permeable brick paver parking pad to conserve water and reduce storm water runoff

“Practical green is all about energy efficiency, healthy and affordable construction practices,” said Bryan Esenberg, NeighborHomes Manager, NHS Redevelopment Corporation, which builds, rehabs, and sells homes to owner occupants. “There are no secrets, but by adopting our practical green standards for building, consumers can save up to 30% a year on their annual energy costs.

“NHS also has the tools to help customers purchase and rehab their own home, including affordable fixed-rate lending services and an NHS construction specialist to secure bids and manage your rehab project.”
