Chicago Neighborhood Advocates Set to be Honored

March 22, 2011

An event at Union Station’s Great Hall will recognize three community leaders whose efforts have strengthened Chicago neighborhoods.

More than 700 Chicago-area residents are expected at the Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago’s (NHS) 36th Annual Awards dinner, “Building, Growing, Leading,” and you could be one of them.

Lisa Madigan

Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan

Our state’s top legal advocate, Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, will receive the NHS 2011 Community Advocate Award for creating new laws that protect homeowners from predatory lending and mortgage fraud.

Presenting the award to Madigan will be Chicago homeowner William Jones, himself a victim of a mortgage scam. Due to the fraudulent incident, Jones almost lost his home to foreclosure; a recent loan modification through the NHS Chicago Lawn/Gage Park office saved the day.

“I’m thankful that Ms. Madigan and her office are cracking down on loan scammers who prey on seniors and other unsuspecting people,” said Jones.

Jim Capraro

NHS of Chicago will also honor Jim Capraro with the Gale Cincotta Community Visionary Award.

A nationally renowned expert on neighborhood development, Capraro worked tirelessly to improve the Chicago Lawn and Gage Park communities throughout his 35 years as the founding Executive Director and CEO of the Greater Southwest Development Corporation. Capraro retired in July.

Finally, Denis Pierce, principal of the real estate law firm Pierce & Associates, P.C., will be presented with the NHS Corporate Leadership Award for utilizing philanthropy to improve access to homeowners facing foreclosure.

Pierce runs the Pierce Family Foundation, which has benefited thousands of residents from his “give back” philosophy to fund housing-related issues and services for the disadvantages.

Sounds like a wonderful evening filled with inspiring people.
