Home Values Falling: Time to Spruce Up the Digs

March 24, 2011

DuPage County homeowners are not only watching the value of their properties decrease but will also see the amount of their property tax bills increase.

For the first time in 40 years, the overall value of property in DuPage County has dropped.

property taxes“This is the first time in modern-day history that the county’s assessed valuation decreased in a year,” said DuPage County Clerk Gary King. “We’ve been on an uphill climb from the beginning, growing like crazy. Now because of the fallout of the whole market, we’ve actually gone down.”

While the averaged assessed property value in DuPage County fell 5.9 percent, the average tax rate for the county’s 372 taxing bodies increased 11.6 percent.

That equates to an average 5.7 percent property tax increase throughout the county, according to the Daily Herald.

Residents can expect their new and unimproved property tax bills around May 1. Payments are due in June and September.

Might as well make your home as comfortable as possible while overpaying for it.
