Chicago Area to Welcome More Hollywood Crews

March 30, 2011

Chicago residents enjoyed watching movie crews tear up portions of the Loop during last summer’s filming of “Transformers 3,” even though it meant enduring street closures and public transportation reroutes.

Now another movie is slated to be shot here, but to watch the action, you’ll have to drive quite a ways outside the city.

Plano, Illinois could become Clark Kent's boyhood home in the new Superman movie.

It has been announced that the next “Superman” movie will be filmed in various locations of the Chicago area this summer. Reportedly, the crew will set up shop in Naperville and film most of the scenes in far west suburban Plano, which is south of Aurora.

The movie’s producer, Chris Nolan, obviously had positive experiences with Chicago as a backdrop: He filmed two Batman movies, “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight,” here in the Windy City.

The filming of “Transformers 3” reportedly made a 20-million impact on the city’s economy and created more than 1,200 jobs.

Superman: Man of Steel,” with its estimated budget of $175 million, should also give a boost to the local economy.

It will star Kevin Costner as Superman’s foster dad and Diane Lane as his mom. Little-known actor Henry Cavill, 27, will play the title role. Amy Adams will become Lois Lane.

Warner Brothers crews are expected to shoot scenes here for two or three months in the summer.

And the CTA won’t even have to reroute as a result.
