Friday a Free Day in Chicago, No Joke

March 31, 2011

Friday is a Free Day in Chicago, according to one shoe company, but it’s also April 1, so we have some free events to list as evidence that we aren’t playing an April Fool’s Day joke on our Chicagoland Real Estate Forum readers.

Nike has declared April 1 a “Free Day” and is inviting all residents to take the day off and be free (hear that, boss?).

To mark the occasion, both Fleet Feet Sports locations (Piper’s Alley and Lincoln Square) will be the starting point for a 3- to 5-mile fun run starting at 6:30 a.m. that will take your feet to the Sports Corner Bar in Wrigleyville.

There, Nike will have a day of games and trivia set up, including breakfast and refreshments and the chance to win tickets to Friday’s Cubs opening day game.

After running the morning away, why not continue the theme with a free health assessment?

The American Kidney Fund is offering a free risk assessment to anyone 18 and older from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday at the UIC School of Public Health, 1603 W. Taylor, Chicago.

The screening will check for indicators of kidney and heart health, diabetes and other important health measures.

Tests include blood pressure check, blood draw and urine sample, so an eight-hour fast before the event will provide the most accurate results.

The event will also feature nutrition and fitness presentations and giveaways.

For more information, visit or call (312) 224-8172.

Here’s another free event on Friday that could be good for your health and the real estate market.

Harper College will host a Job Fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in its Wellness and Sports Center (Building M), 1200 W. Algonquin Road in Palatine. Park in Lots 1 and 2.

Dozens of employers representing a wide range of fields will be on site to speak with job seekers, and all have available positions.

Friday is the last day to vote for your favorite seed at

Go to the web site, read about the candidates and vote for your favorite one, then the urban greening project will send the winning seed to all participating Chicagoland residents for free with instructions on how to plant them in your garden.

April showers bring May flowers, so it’s time to start seeding!
