Spring Bill Cleaning at Chicagoland Clinics

April 03, 2011

You’ve heard of Spring cleaning your Chicago home, but when’s the last time you’ve cleaned up your home phone bill?

The Citizens Utility Board (CUB) is launching a “Spring Savings Week” campaign to help Chicago-area residents”scrub” their phone bills of unnecessary charges.

The effort comes after a 2009 study showing that Illinois residents could be overpaying their phone bills by $1 billion a year.

Plus, AT&T just increased its landline phone rates 27 to 63 percent in January. So, is it time to get rid of that landline? CUB says no.

“Nobody really thinks phone rates are low, and developments this year show how much callers need solid, money-saving information to clean up their bills,” said CUB Executive Director David Kolata. “The good news is that savings can be just 60 seconds away for frustrated phone customers.”

CUB officials will host a money-saving event each day this week to help consumers “tidy up” their phone bills and cut their costs.

CUB Spring Savings Week clinics:

*Monday, April 4 at 2 p.m.: Glenview Public Library, 1930 Glenview Rd., Glenview.

*Tuesday, April 5 at 11:30 a.m.: Morton Grove Public Library, 6140 Lincoln Ave., Morton Grove. Space is limited, so register for this event at (847) 929-5101.

*Wednesday, April 6 at 9:30 a.m.: Frankfort Public Library District, 21119 Pfeiffer Rd., Frankfort

*Thursday, April 7 at 6 p.m.: Morton Grove Public Library, 6140 Lincoln Ave., Morton Grove. Space is limited, so register at (847) 929-5101.

*Friday, April 8 at 10 a.m.: Cary Public Library, 1606 Three Oak Rd., Cary. Space is limited, so register for this event at (847) 639-4210.

Be sure to bring your phone bill for a free analysis from a CUB expert.

CUB claims it can help you cut your phone bill by an average of about $500 a year.

Can’t make a clinic? Check out CUB’s new video, “60 Seconds to Phone Savings,” which offers tips to cut landline phone bills.

“CUB’s brand of spring cleaning doesn’t involve a mop or a broom,” Kolata said. “Armed with a little information from CUB’s experts, consumers can cut their bills by hundreds of dollars a year.”
