Chicago Home to Nation’s Highest Gas Prices

April 25, 2011

Gas sign that says ARM, LEG and First Born for prices.Lucky us: Chicago drivers are paying more at the pump than anyone else in the country.

A recent Lundberg Survey of fuel prices uncovered the fact that Chicagoans are paying an average of $4.27 a gallon for regular unleaded gasoline compared to the national average of $3.88 a gallon.

You’d have to travel to Tucson, Arizona, to find the nation’s cheapest gas at $3.54, but who can afford to pay for the gas to get there?

If you get a ticket sent to you claiming you did something wrong while driving on the Illinois Tollway, there’s a new tool for you.

The Illinois State Toll Highway Authority has launched an online platform where drivers can see the image of the offending license plate.

Before this, the only way to see the car that got the ticket was to have the image sent to you or to travel to the tollway headquarters in Downers Grove.

At IllinoisTollway.com, car owners can see the license plate in question, then dispute the violation or simply pay up.

Beats wasting gas to drive to court.

The Chicago Transit Authority is getting on board the eco-friendly train, well, bus in this case.

The CTA recently approved an ordinance to purchase two battery-operated ones.

The two 35- to 40-foot electric buses, which run entirely on lithium-ion batteries, will be bought with the help of a $2.2 million Federal Transit Administration grant.

The grant money will also be used to set up charging stations at bus garages or at the end of routes.

On average, electric buses can go about 30 to 40 miles on a complete battery charge.

Don’t know how that will work with Chicago’s unpredictable weather and congested traffic, but the idea of a battery-operated bus couldn’t be coming at a better time.
