Learn About Real Estate, Enter to Win a Free House

April 29, 2011

Now, here’s a boot camp that could really pay off.

The City of Rockford and Rockford Area Realtors are hosting the 2011 Real Estate Boot Camp from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 30, and the grand-prize giveaway will be a home.

The informational fair is for current and prospective home buyers, sellers and investors.

The event will feature seven half-hour mini seminars:

*Why buy now?

*How to sell a home in today’s buyer’s market.

*What to expect with a foreclosed property or short sale.

*What factors to consider when purchasing a home in today’s economy.

*An overview of housing incentive programs.

*Creative financing and credit clean-up strategies.

*10 steps in the home-buying process.

There will also be a first-time home buyer panel, home inspection tours and “Realtor Speed Dating,” in which participants will get 4-minute-long, one-on-one sessions with a Realtor and lender to ask questions.

“This will be an interactive event with many ways for anyone owning a home, thinking about buying a home or getting ready to sell a home to get the latest information with which to make the right move in the current economy,” said Steve Bois, CEO of Rockford Area Realtors.

Residents who don’t own a home will be eligible to win one at this event. For every seminar they attend, their name will be entered into a drawing to become a Chance Winner. Sixty-five Chance Winners will be drawn, and each will be given a house key. The one that opens the door to the giveaway home will win it.

That home, at 948 Grant Ave. in Rockford’s historic Signal Hill neighborhood, was purchased by the city of Rockford with funds from the federal government’s Neighborhood Stabilization Program. A majority of the work to rehab and update the property is being donated by area building tradesmen and home interior suppliers.

HGTV’s Chip Wade, star of the remodeling shows Curb Appeal and Designed to Sell, will lead a walking tour of the Signal Hill neighborhood at noon, offering tips on how to make the most out of a home’s exterior.

At 3 p.m., the event moves to the Rockford Woman’s Club, 323 Park Ave., in downtown Rockford, where Wade will present for a closing keynote on “Designed to Sell,” strategies for quickly moving your house off the market.

“Housing is important to the city of Rockford in many different ways,” said Rockford Mayor Larry Morrissey (I).

“It still represents the American dream for most of our hard-working citizens, comprising 15 percent of our nation’s Gross Domestic Product. A high level of home ownership with nicely-maintained properties reflects well on the image of our city, provides for stable neighborhood living, and encourages increased investment to the city.”
