Highland Park Resident Captures NBA Title

May 01, 2011

Chicago’s own Tom Thibodeau has been named NBA Coach of the Year.

An assistant coach for 21 years, Thibodeau, 53, spent his first year as Bulls head coach by leading the team to a league-best record of 62-20, scoring three Eastern Conference coach of the month awards, and tying an NBA record for most victories by a first-year head coach.

So, I started to wonder: In what piece of Chicago real estate does Thibodeau hang all his awards?

Last June, Thibodeau signed a contract with the Bulls for three years and $6.5 million. The following month he signed another contract, this time to rent an eight-room row home in north suburban Highland Park.

According to Bob Goldsborough of the Tribune, the NBA Coach of the Year leases the three-bedroom home for $4,900 a month, and that home is owned by listing agent Jacquelyn Muller of Prudential Rubloff, who paid $865,000 for it in 2008.

The property, built in 2007, has three-full and two-half baths, a fireplace, a study, an elevator, a gourmet kitchen and a finished lower level.

Thibodeau is not the first Bulls coach to call Highland Park home. The two most recent coaches both bought Highland Park homes while on duty. Not a surprise, since the suburb is close to the Berto Center, the Bulls practice facility in nearby Deerfield.

Vinny Del Negro, who was coach from 2008 until he was fired in 2010, still reportedly owns the Highland Park house he bought for $1.2 million in 2008, though he did try for a spell to sell it.

Scott Skiles, who coached the team from 2003 to 2007, lost money on the home he purchased in 2005 for $1.425 million and sold for $1.3265 million in 2008.

Maybe that’s why Thibodeau decided to rent rather than buy, even in this buyer’s market.

Congratulations on the outstanding year, Tom! Maybe it will continue and the Bulls coach will end up buying a Chicago-area home after all.
