Chicago Mayor Bets Against the Hawks

May 02, 2011

Before Chicago’s longest-serving mayor steps down from his post in a couple weeks, he made sure to fulfill a very important mayoral duty:

Daley was joined at a press conference by team executives, former Bulls players Bob Love and Sydney Green, Benny the Bull and the food being wagered against the Hawks.

He wagered on the Chicago Bulls playoff series against the Atlanta Hawks.

Mayor Richard M. Daley has set up a traditional Chicago food wager against Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed.

The best part: When Chicago wins the Eastern Conference semi-final playoff series — and we will — anything edible we score from Atlanta will be donated to the Chicago Food Depository.

The wager includes products from these Chicago Companies:

* Abundance Bakery: Three dozen Bulls Red Velvet Cupcakes

* Affy Tapple: 10 Cases of Affy Tapples

* Azteca Foods: Flour and Corn Tortillas and Chips

* C.J. Vitner Snack Co.: Sizzlin’ Hot Crunchy Kurls, Popcorn and Potato Chips

* Connie’s Pizza: 20 Cheese and 11 Sausage

* Fontanini Italian Meats: Three Cases of Italian Beef

* Gonnella Baking: A Three-foot Super Sub Sandwich

* Robinson’s Ribs: Three BBQ Sauce Gift Sets

* Vienna Beef: 2,011 Chicago Style Hot Dogs

* Sam’s Lasagna: Chicken, Veggie and Turkey Lasagnas

“We all know how much Chicagoans care about their sports teams,” said Mayor Daley. “The kind of excitement the Bulls are creating brings people together and is great for the spirit of our city.”

The Bulls-Hawks series begins today. Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel is sworn in on May 16. If the Bulls and Hawks force a Game 7, it will take place May 15.

So Daley will still be able to gloat from his post.

Go Bulls!
