Chicago Block Named for Chicago Resident

May 11, 2011

Oprah Winfrey, a woman who appears to have it all, now also has her own Chicago street.

On Wednesday, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley renamed the block in front of Oprah’s Harpo Studios “Oprah Winfrey Way.”

Chicago started naming streets after people in the early 1980s, which is when Oprah first came to Chicago to host a morning talk show.

The Associated Press took this photo of Mayor Daley presenting Oprah with her own Chicago street.

She would go on to become one of the most influential people in Chicago and beyond.

Now, after 27 years in our fare city, Oprah is closing up shop at the end of this month.

But before she goes, Mayor Daley made sure to add her to an an elite list of about 1,200 people who have Chicago streets adorning their names. Daley referred to Oprah as “a great ambassador for our city.”

“I just want to say thank you to the mayor and also to the city of Chicago for embracing me and allowing me to take a stand and make a stand here in this city,” said Winfrey at the ceremony, which was attended by a couple hundred people.

Mayor Daley is another one closing up shop. His last day is Monday, when Rahm Emanuel is sworn in as Chicago’s new mayor.

There are celebrations planned for that event. Stay tuned to Chicagoland Real Estate Forum for more information.
